Emmys stars shine, with a nod and wink, in the twittersphere

How many people does it take to get Heidi Klum looking that good? What does an Emmy nominee eat for breakfast? What do Zooey Deschanel's thumbs look like?

If you've ever wondered about any of those minute details, the stars themselves gave the answers at this year's Emmys.

While some celebrities and gossip websites preferred to live tweet the awards show – about as exciting as a bumbling acceptance speech – far more insight came from behind-the-scenes pictures posted by the stars to Twitter and Instgram.

Heidi Klum posted regular updates on her show preparations, including a happy snap with four make-up artists and beauticians.

The New Girl star Zooey Deschanel posted a picture of her thumbnail, decorated with a sparkly television for the occasion, which was retweeted more than 1000 times.

Her friends also posted a picture of the actress getting the finishing touches on her make-up and hairstyle. Hours before she hit the red carpet in a Prada dress, Girls creator and star Lena Dunham posted a picture of herself with panda eyes, wearing pyjamas and eating cake for breakfast.

Girls executive producer Judd Apatow, who has produced hit films Bridesmaids, Step Brothers and Anchorman, also took a low-key approach, taking photos of his face early in the morning and comparing himself to his glamorous wife, actress Leslie Mann.

Hollywood stalwarts Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks posed in the back of their limo, with Wilson saying the pair – who have been married for 24 years – would spend the ride making out.

But the celebrities appeared to slow down on the behind-the-scenes photos that could have proved to be the most interesting: the after-party shots.

But if you've ever wondered what a Hollywood party looks like, entertainment columnist Jace Lacob tweeted a picture from the HBO soiree.

    Predictably, it looks amazing.
