It has been 49 years and many iterations since our first $5 note hit wallets in 1967.
The latest version, revealed on Tuesday, is especially designed for the visually impaired, with bold colours and "tactile" features incorporated into the plastic bank note.
With a transparent central window and the eye-catching yellow blooms of wattle, the note is a departure from the more muted current design.
"Each banknote in the new series will depict a different species of Australian wattle and a native bird within a number of the elements. On the $5 banknote, these are the Prickly Moses wattle (Acacia verticillata subsp. ovoidea) and the Eastern Spinebill (Acanthorhynchus tenuirostris)," reads a description on the Reserve Bank of Australia's website.
"There is a new 'tactile' feature to help the vision-impaired community distinguish between different denominations of banknotes. The tactile feature will be in addition to the existing features present on our current banknote series – bright colours, large contrasting numerals and size differentials."
The new note will go into circulation alongside current notes from September 1. Its design took in research involving focus groups, and is the "culmination of a process of extensive consultation with subject-matter experts and the cash-handling industry", read an RBA statement.
Twitter has spoken in swift and customarily opinionated fashion, with naysayers branding it "vomit like", as if drawn by a "kindergartener" and "disgusting".
Others have questioned the use of Queen Elizabeth II's image in the design, as is the current norm on Australian $5 banknotes.
And while the new note may be replete with Australian imagery, it has a long way to go until reaching the truly "Strayan" heights of artist Aaron Tyler's ideas for a new "five buck" note, on which Dame Edna beams alongside meat pies, a VB logo and the MCG.
