Police are reviewing the charges against two Geelong amateur footballers after a man they are accused of assaulting died in hospital overnight.
Clint Hislop, 28, had been on life support since the attack outside a hostel in the beachside suburb of Glenelg in Adelaide on Monday morning.
Mr Hislop suffered critical head injuries in the attack in High Street about 2.30am, and police said the McLaren Vale man's life support was switched off at the Flinders Medical Centre last night.
Bradley John Nelson and Rhys Alan Millard, both 23, appeared in Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with aggravated assault causing harm, however those charges now could be upgraded.
"Police will be reviewing the charges against the two men accused of the assault, in consultation with the DPP [Director of Public Prosecutions]," a South Australia Police spokesperson said.
Nelson and Millard, who play for the Inverleigh Football Club, were released on bail on Tuesday to return to Victoria on the condition that they regularly report to Geelong police.
The men had been on an end-of-season trip with their football club when the alleged attack occurred.
They were ordered to return to court on December 18.
