Housos hit the big screen

The television show made headlines for its controversial depiction of low-income earners in Australia.

And now Housos is due to hit the big screen in Housos vs Authority.

Franky, Kylie, Shazza, Dazza, Wazza, Habib and Rocky are back and headed north.

The group set out for Uluru to honour Shazza’s mum’s dying wish — to have her ashes scattered over Ayers Rock.

One of the stars of the show, Jason ‘Jabba’ Davis, plays Dazza Jones.

He said he was excited about the screening.

‘‘I don’t know how to describe what it was like to make the movie,’’ he said.

‘‘It was like a lightening strike and we put it all together in a very short time — it was very Paul Fenech (creator).

‘‘He gets a lot of bang for his buck.

‘‘We go back almost 20 years and we’ve been through a lot of experiences together.

‘‘He’s tough but he knows what he wants and he gets it.’’

In 2011 the show made headlines when thousands of western Sydney residents signed a petition that urged SBS to abandon the show.

Mount Druitt MP Richard Amery threw his support behind the calls to axe the comedy.

Davis said while the publicity was good, the message of the show had been misunderstood.

‘‘On the one hand people say it’s just bogans getting around but there is more to it than that.

‘‘Everybody knows someone who is like the people in Housos.

‘‘People appreciate that we like to make fun and also be made fun of.

‘‘But the only thing worse than being talked about is not getting talked about.’’

The former James Ruse Agricultural High School student said he was proud of the finished product.

‘‘It’s not every day you get to be in a film.’’

Bound for cinemas across Australia on November 1, the Australian premier will be held at Event Cinemas Parramatta on October 26.
