A Tribute goes wild

AFTER 13 days their classical cover of monster single Gangnam Style had 106,831 views leaving their cellist, Hanna Oblikov of Cherrybrook, as surprised as the next person.

"It's not the most obvious choice to do a cover of; we just thought it would be fun," Hanna said of Aston's decision to cover Gangnam Style by Korean pop singer PSY (real name Park Jae-Sang).

Aston takes pop and rock music and radically rearranges it to a produce classical version, almost always at the request of their Facebook fans — all 22,748 of them.

A YouTube success story in their own right, Aston reached the million views mark in July 2010 after only three months with their unique instrumental take on Lady Gaga's Telephone — the most-viewed Australian music video of the year after celebrity blogger Perez Hilton posted it on his website.

"When Lady Gaga came to Sydney we played Telephone for her at her hotel," Hanna, 25, said.

She said it was Perez Hilton's idea.

"She was actually very gracious about it."

Aston's other covers have included Without You by David Guetta, featuring Usher, which was performed on the US Dancing With the Stars.

The performance was nominated for an Emmy for outstanding choreography.

Hanna and violinist Eliza Morrison also performed with Seal at this year's Logies.

"We're heading to Mexico on Tuesday [today] to open up Onixeus [a nightclub] in Tijuana," Hanna said.

The band, all friends who met at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, includes Michael Bennett (violin), Ella Jamieson (piano) and the band's percussionist, Daniel Luscombe, who arranged Aston's cover of Gangnam Style.

Patrick Abrams, 25, also from Cherrybrook, is guitarist Will Henderson's new replacement.

Aston's second album, II, is available for purchase on iTunes.
