From Seven Hills to Vanuatu, Joan van den Burg has been recognised for her contributions to the community.

The administration director of The Hills-Kellyville Rotary Club was last week named the local Woman of the Year by Seven Hills MP Mark Taylor.

Mrs van den Burg, of Glenwood, said she was “shocked” when Mr Taylor called with the news saying she had been recognised for her work at home and abroad with Rotary.

“You don’t do it for the recognition, you do it because you enjoy it,” she said.

Mrs van den Burg was involved with the former Winston Hills club since her husband joined in 1988, before women could be members.

The Hills-Kellyville club is known for the Australia Day breakfast and citizenship ceremony at First Settlement Reserve, assisting Northwest Disability Services and helping schools in Vanuatu.

Mrs van den Burg’s career saw her working in child protection and disability services, and she said she enjoys doing similar work for free in her semi-retirement.

“I like working with like-minded people to help develop the community,” she said.

Mr Taylor said it was wonderful to celebrate and acknowledge someone who has gone above and beyond for the community.

“Joan has made an enormous contribution to our community with her work through Rotary so it was great to formally recognise that on International Women’s Day,” he said.
