STORIES of how the Lions Club have helped many people were shared during a 100th birthday celebration on June 8
The Hills Council hosted Zone 10 Lions Clubs to say thanks for the incredible work they do to support people in the community.
Mayor Yvonne Keane and her son Asher shared their appreciation of the organisation, as they have benefitted from the work of a local Lions Club.
“Our very own awe-inspiring Lions Clubs have served our region with lion-like courage for over 50 years, raising more than $2.8 million for worthy causes and giving hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours to improving the wellbeing of Hills residents,” Cr Keane said.
“Indeed, the Lions were one of the first groups to provide seed funding that helped to establish Hear the Children in The Hills – an essential program that helps deaf children to speak like you and I.
“Because of clubs like Lions, my own son's impairment - like many of the kids from Hear the Children - will never be a handicap to him in his life.
“He just wears hearings aids, like some people wear glasses. I am forever grateful to the Lions Club for this and so many other magnificent contributions.”
Asher delivered a beautiful speech, telling the Lions Club members that their support of Hear the Children changed his life.
Diane Robinson thanked the Crestwood Lions for always supporting her son, who has cerebral palsy and autism.
“When I approached the Lions, they didn’t hesitate to help,” she said.
The Lions Club have supported Nicholas by providing assistance to purchase wheelchairs and an app that helps him communicate.
“Nicholas has progressed from single words to sentences,” Ms Robinson said.
“His first sentence was along the lines of asking his dad for a tickle.”
Tony Bell and his six-year-old daughter Ava shared their story about Ava’s successful fight against neuroblastoma, and the work Lions Club is doing to help support neuroblastoma research.
Lions Clubs members from The Hills region were recognised for their outstanding contributions.
Tadhg Fitzpatrick, Khushal Polepalle, John Giorgiutti, Steve Coleman, Deirk Bohn, Garry Horvai, Tom McQuillan, Margot McGuirk, Jennifer Touzel, John Ebbott, Geoff Irvine, Bruce O’Toole, Ian Cavanagh, Kathy Ebbott, Bruno Guarna, Stuart Rooke, John Foster, Allan Drew and Elizabeth Lessels were presented with awards.
