SCHOOLS are seeing new technologies and activities become available every day.

But a school in The Hills region has kept an old tradition alive by hosting a debutante ball.

Young women and men from Oakhill College recently attended a debutante ball at Epping Club, with 18 young girls participating in the event.

Debutante balls are traditionally an event where young women would make their formal entrance into society.

The students learned about etiquette, traditional dances and the process of being presented during the four weeks leading up to the June 10 event.

School principal Br Steve Hogan was proud of the students who participated in the event.

”At a time when so many traditions are being lost to contemporary thought; Oakhill College continues to offer its young men and women the opportunity to experience a social event which highlights for young women and men that formality still has a place in contemporary society,” Br Steve said.

“Education is about offering a full range of experiences from which its students can choose to participate.

“The debutante ball offers a sense of community; coming together in celebration of our youth, at a time when the media is all to eager to represent the negative aspects of teenagers.”

An estimated 800 family and friends watched the girls be presented to the guest of honour, The Hills councillor Michelle Byrne, at the event.

Lauren Martin, who was one of the debutantes, said it was a great night.

“The debutante ball was an evening I had always wanted to attend at Oakhill College,” she said.

“After all the preparation leading up to the night, it was definitely worth it and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

“It was a very elegant evening, with all the debutantes looking beautiful and their partners looking very handsome.

“Everyone enjoyed themselves and had a lot of fun, especially when on the dance floor and in the photo booth.

“It was an enjoyable evening and was an unforgettable experience.”
