Canberrans might rely on the coast for the surf and summer escape, but it goes both ways.
Figures from the Eurobodalla Tourism Authority show almost a third of overnight visitors come from Canberra.
An estimated 235,500 Canberrans will flock to the Eurobodalla Shire during the holiday period.
Of that, 69 per cent travel for a holiday, while 22 per cent will be visiting friends and relatives according to Eurobodalla Tourism.
More than half of tourists will head to the beach during their visit for a day in the sun or to participate in activities such as snorkelling, scuba diving and surfing.
Head coach of Broulee Surf School Shane Wehner said the core of the market has always been from Canberra.
"We've been pretty solid with bookings from Canberra probably since the early days," Mr Wehner said.
"A lot of people come to stay in Eurobodalla and it just makes sense they come and do surfing and they've been coming to us for the best part of 20 years for surfing lessons.
"That's gotten bigger and stronger in the last sort of decade."
Mr Wehner, a former pro surfer, said the increase in people enrolling for surf school during summer could be due to school groups who go to the shire for single and multi-day surfing camps.
"A lot of the schools use it as a reward at the end the year, as part of their PE [physical education] or outdoor curriculum, but often some schools take them down here for a day of surfing as a thank you for working hard through the school year.
"Students return to us in the summer when their sporting for the year comes to an end and they're looking for something to do."
The surf school is currently working with up to 20 schools, 14 of which are from the ACT.
He said surfing is a family affair, not just for the children.
"One of our most common jobs is mum, dad and the three kids and sometimes even grandpa and grandma," he said.
"I've had two or three clients in the last month that have been well into their late 60s and they want to experience surfing for the first time.
"There's no reason why we can't get them out there, it's just the challenge becomes the fitness level. "
