A father and three children have been winched to safety after spending several hours stranded on Gold Coast waters overnight.
The family was heading home from an afternoon out on the water on a jet ski when they took a wrong turn down an estuary and became caught in mangroves north of Sovereign Island.

Water police and other rescue crews couldn't reach the family due to shallow water, so the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter was called in and plucked the four from the stranded vessel at about 10pm on Saturday.
The family was assessed by paramedics and given the all-clear.
