'Significant' rain to dump flooding rain on inland areas
Summer is likely to get off to a stormy and sodden start for much of eastern Australia as an unusual weather combination brings tropics-like deluges on inland regions.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for a swathe of NSW from Cooma in the south-east to Wentworth in the west and towards Cobar in the north. Read more
Sydney Uni lashes out over 'serious impact' of train timetable changes
Sydney University has warned of the "serious impact" on thousands of students, staff and other commuters of a decision for trains on the Blue Mountain Line to no longer stop at Redfern Station, making their trips "lengthier and more challenging".
In a swipe at the state's transport agency, vice-chancellor Michael Spence said the decision for trains on the line to bypass Redfern in favour of Central Station had "added greatly to the university's already significant public transport pressures". Read more via SMH
Tributes for worker killed in Blue Mountains rock collapse
The man killed in a rock fall on a popular walking track in the Blue Mountains on Wednesday has been labelled a "hero" by friends on social media.
A day after the tragedy, friends paid tribute to Dave Gliddon, describing the 36-year-old as "a beautiful soul" who was "strong as an ox and calm as a monk".
"Positive, enthusiastic, he was one of those people who could change the energy in the room," James Kell wrote on Facebook. "Very, very sad when someone so cool gets taken far too early." Read more
Teacher ‘so sorry’ for sex with student’
A former Sydney Grammar School teacher awaiting sentence for having sex with a 17-year-old schoolboy has denied she was responsible for incorrect media reports that she was pregnant with his child at the time of her arrest.
During an emotional sentencing hearing on Thursday, the woman told the Downing Centre District Court she was "devastated" she had hurt the student, and wished she could "convert my sorrow into something that would help him". Read more
