A police pursuit of a disqualified driver through western Sydney ended with detectives being assaulted and bitten by the driver and passenger, Parramatta Bail Court has heard.
Police from Liverpool Local Area Command allege they saw a green VW van being driven dangerously at Bass Hill on Friday afternoon. When they tried to stop the van, the vehicle sped away.
Police soon determined the driver, alleged to be 36-year-old Bankstown man Hassan Wraydeh, had no license to drive and had a warrant out for his arrest for leading police on a similar pursuit in a stolen car in November 2012.
It's alleged Wraydeh and his 21-year-old female passenger managed to evade police briefly - long enough to pursue almost $200 worth of clothes with a fraudulent Visa card at Bass Hill - before the chase continued, joined this time by nearby detectives from the Middle Eastern and Organised Crime Squad
When the car eventually stopped, police allege the passenger, who was off her medication for diagnosed mental conditions, bit and assaulted detectives as they tried to arrest her for failing to appear in court on a previous count of assaulting police.
Police Prosecutor, acting Sergeant Naaz Basha, said such behaviour was uncalled for.
"The police work day in, day out, to keep our community safe and they should not be subject to assault," she said.
Mr Wraydeh was charged with various offences including resisting arrest, leading police on a pursuit and having goods in custody, while the woman was charged with resisting arrest and assaulting police.
Mr Wraydeh was remanded in custody, while the woman was granted strict conditional bail.
The pair will face court again later this month.
