About 16 months before he allegedly stabbed Morgan Huxley to death, Daniel Jack Kelsall had thoughts about killing someone with a knife "for the thrill of it", a court has been told.
Mr Huxley, 31, was found lying in the doorway of his bedroom in his Neutral Bay flat, covered in blood in the early hours of September 8, 2013.
At the first day of Mr Kelsall's NSW Supreme Court murder trial on Wednesday, Crown prosecutor Peter McGrath, SC, told the jury the accused had told a doctor and psychiatrist about the thoughts in early 2012.
"[The doctor's evidence] will be the accused told her in confidence that he was having intrusive thoughts about killing people with a knife on the way home at night," Mr McGrath said.
"He told her he took a knife home late one night but he didn't meet anyone."
Mr Kelsall was a cleaner at the Sydney Cooking School in Neutral Bay, the court heard.
He later told a psychiatrist he had thoughts about killing someone "for the thrill of it", Mr McGrath said.
"[Kelsall said] it would probably be a total random, with a knife," he said.
But when asked if he wanted to kill someone, Mr Kelsall replied "absolutely not".
Mr Kelsall has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Mr Huxley, and to one charge of indecently assaulting him.
The crown alleges Mr Kelsall followed Mr Huxley from The Oaks Hotel back to his Watson Street apartment, where he was stabbed to death in his bedroom.
The jury has been told they will hear evidence that Mr Kelsall's DNA was found on Mr Huxley's penis, and his fingerprint was found on his bedroom doorway.
Mr McGrath also told the jury that Mr Huxley's blood was found on Mr Kelsall's bag.
The jury heard Mr Huxley's flatmate, Jean Redmond, found him lying covered in blood in his bedroom doorway, after she heard some thumping and screeching sounds.
A post-mortem revealed Mr Huxley had been stabbed to the neck, head and upper body.
He had 28 wounds, and the tip of a knife was found lodged in his skull, the court heard.
Mr Kelsall's barrister, Christopher Watson, said his client would give evidence during the trial.
"There will be important forensic evidence that will be brought before you about the condition of the deceased's bedroom where the killing took place," Mr Watson said.
"You may well expect that there would be blood on the [perpetrator's] clothes or there would be blood on the person's shoes.
"There was a search and a collection of all the work clothes that the accused used. The police also obtained his boots that he would wear to work and there was no forensic material found at all."
